Political War Erupts Over PM Awas Yojana in Chhattisgarh: Vijay Sharma Targets Congress, TS Singh Deo Hits Back
Deputy CM's letter to CM Vishnu Deo Sai sparks fresh political controversy; BJP accuses previous Congress government of denying houses to the poor, while TS Singh Deo raises questions over alleged beneficiary deductions.
Raipur, 12 June 2026: The political battle between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress in Chhattisgarh has intensified over the implementation of the Prime Minister Awas Yojana (PMAY). A letter written by Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma to Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has triggered a fresh political storm in the state.
In his letter, Sharma claimed that the Sai government has achieved significant progress in PMAY over the last two and a half years. He alleged that the previous Congress government failed to provide the mandatory 40 percent state matching grant required for the scheme, resulting in lakhs of poor families being deprived of permanent housing.
The Deputy CM also referred to the resignation of former Panchayat Minister and then Deputy Chief Minister, TS Singh Deo, during the Congress regime. According to Sharma, Singh Deo had stepped down after expressing dissatisfaction over the government’s inability to allocate sufficient funds for housing projects meant for the poor.
The letter has reignited debate over the Congress government’s handling of the scheme, with the BJP portraying it as a major example of administrative failure and neglect of welfare commitments.
Responding to the allegations, TS Singh Deo acknowledged that PMAY did not progress as expected during the Congress tenure and reiterated that he had accepted responsibility for the shortcomings by resigning from the concerned department.
However, Singh Deo launched a counterattack on the current BJP government, alleging that beneficiaries of the housing scheme are facing unauthorized deductions of up to ₹10,000. He further claimed that many rural beneficiaries are being forced to spend additional money from their own pockets to complete the construction of their houses.
With both parties trading charges, PM Awas Yojana has emerged as a major political flashpoint in Chhattisgarh. While the BJP is highlighting the alleged failures of the previous government, the Congress is questioning the implementation and transparency of the current administration. Political observers believe the issue is likely to remain at the center of the state’s political discourse in the coming months.
